Pink Magic Bower Vine

Pink Magic Bower Vine (Pandorea jasminoides 'Pink Magic') is the fast Australian native climber for covering a bare fence or carport frame without waiting three years. Given a support it reaches about 5m and spreads roughly 2m wide, carrying large soft pink trumpets with a deep rose throat from spring through summer. The glossy foliage stays dense all year, so the screen still works once flowering finishes.

Coastal gardens and feature planting. Salt tolerance suits exposed blocks, and a single plant trained over an arch or pergola post makes a strong feature.

Growing Pink Magic Bower Vine in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun gives the heaviest flowering, though it grows in part shade with fewer blooms. It suits tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens, and takes light frost only, so cold inland, tableland and southern gardens will see damage without a warm sheltered wall.

Soil. Well drained soil enriched with compost. It is not fussy about type but sulks in wet ground. Mulch 75mm deep, clear of the stems.

Water and feed. Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, then weekly in dry spells. It is drought tolerant once established but flowers better with steady moisture. Feed a controlled release fertiliser in early spring and mid summer.

Pruning. This is the job that matters. Prune after the main flowering, thinning tangled stems and shortening long runners, or the vine goes heavy and bare at the base with all the growth up top. It reshoots readily, so an overgrown plant can be cut back hard in early spring.

What to expect when it arrives

Common questions

How far apart should I plant it along a fence?

About 1.5m apart. At that spacing the plants meet and cover the full run within two seasons without competing for water at the roots.

Does it need a trellis?

Yes. It is a twining climber, not a self clinging one, so it needs wires, mesh or a trellis to wrap around. It will not attach itself to a bare brick or rendered wall.

Will it damage my fence?

The stems twine rather than rooting into surfaces, so it is gentler than a self clinging vine. The weight adds up over years though, so fit wires to a timber paling fence to carry the load.
