Himalayan Birch

Himalayan Birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii) is grown for bark, not flowers. The trunk turns chalk white and stays that way year round, on a slim deciduous tree reaching about 10m tall and only 3.5m wide. Add clear yellow autumn foliage and a narrow footprint, and it becomes one of the few large trees that genuinely fits a small garden.

Small gardens and shade. Light dappled shade rather than heavy cover, so lawn and underplanting still grow beneath it.

Growing Himalayan Birch in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to light shade. This is a cool temperate and warm temperate tree, at its best in cool southern gardens, the tablelands and Adelaide. It struggles in hot humid subtropical gardens, so northern coastal buyers should choose something else.

Soil. Deep, moisture retentive soil suits it best. It handles heavier ground and periodic wet feet better than most trees, but it does not want to bake dry.

Water and feed. Birches are shallow rooted and dislike drought. Water deeply through summer for the first three years, mulch 75mm deep and keep it clear of the trunk. A complete slow release fertiliser in early spring is enough.

Pruning. Very little. Remove crossing branches only, and prune in summer or early autumn rather than late winter, because birches bleed sap heavily when cut while dormant.

What to expect when it arrives

Common questions

How long before the bark turns white?

Give it two to four years in the ground. Young stems start tan or coppery and whiten as the outer layers begin to peel, and full sun on the trunk speeds the change.

Will it grow in Brisbane or the subtropics?

Not well. Sustained heat and humidity are its weak point, and trees planted in humid coastal gardens tend to be short lived and thin in the canopy. Cool and warm temperate districts are where it performs.

Are the roots a problem near pipes or paving?

The root system is shallow and fibrous rather than invasive, so it is safer near paving than most trees of this height. Allow around 3m of clearance and avoid planting directly over a drainage line.
