Golden Irish Moss

Golden Irish Moss (Sagina subulata 'Aurea') is the soft chartreuse carpet that fills the gaps between pavers and softens a rockery edge. It sits about 50mm high, spreads to roughly 30cm, takes light foot traffic and carries tiny white flowers through spring and summer. It is neither a grass nor a moss.

Growing Golden Irish Moss in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. The gold is strongest in sun, though hot inland gardens need afternoon shade. It suits cool temperate, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens. Humid tropical and subtropical summers are its weak point, where the centre of the cushion rots out.

Soil. Free draining is everything. Sandy or gritty soil suits it. On clay, raise the bed and work coarse sand and compost through. Between pavers, a gritty sandy mix beats bagged potting mix.

Water and feed. Light regular watering while it knits together, then moderate watering once established. It takes neither drying right out nor sitting wet. A light feed of complete fertiliser in early spring keeps the colour bright.

Pruning. No mowing. If a patch mounds up or browns in the centre, press it flat underfoot, or replant the healthy edges in autumn or spring.

Can I walk on it?

Light, occasional foot traffic, yes. It is not a lawn substitute for a path used every day.

Why has the middle of my patch gone brown?

Usually humidity and poor drainage, not drought. Improve airflow, ease back on watering, and replant the healthy outer sections in spring or autumn.

Is it safe for dogs?

Yes, it is not toxic to cats or dogs. It will wear thin under heavy paw traffic, so use it beside the route rather than on it.
