Golden Irish Moss (Sagina subulata 'Aurea') is the soft chartreuse carpet that fills the gaps between pavers and softens a rockery edge. It sits about 50mm high, spreads to roughly 30cm, takes light foot traffic and carries tiny white flowers through spring and summer. It is neither a grass nor a moss.

Why you'll love it

  • Colour without flowers. The foliage holds bright lime gold all year, lifting a grey paved area more reliably than a seasonal bloom.
  • It stays low. At about 50mm high it never needs mowing or shearing, and it will not swamp its neighbours.
  • Safe around pets. Not toxic to cats or dogs, so it suits a lawn edge or a courtyard the dog uses.
  • Genuinely frost hardy. Cold does not bother it, so it works in cool temperate gardens where softer carpeting plants give up.

Where it works best

Between pavers and steppers. Plant 20cm apart in the gaps and the cushions meet within a season. It takes the occasional footstep, not a daily thoroughfare.

Groundcover and mass planting. The same spacing carpets a whole bed in one season.

Rockeries and borders. It spills over stone and holds a crisp path edge without the trimming a clipped border needs.

Pots and containers. Useful under a potted tree or shrub, where it hides the mix and keeps the surface cool. Low and dense, it also handles wind on an exposed balcony.

Growing Golden Irish Moss in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. The gold is strongest in sun, though hot inland gardens need afternoon shade. It suits cool temperate, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens. Humid tropical and subtropical summers are its weak point, where the centre of the cushion rots out.

Soil. Free draining is everything. Sandy or gritty soil suits it. On clay, raise the bed and work coarse sand and compost through. Between pavers, a gritty sandy mix beats bagged potting mix.

Water and feed. Light regular watering while it knits together, then moderate watering once established. It takes neither drying right out nor sitting wet. A light feed of complete fertiliser in early spring keeps the colour bright.

Pruning. No mowing. If a patch mounds up or browns in the centre, press it flat underfoot, or replant the healthy edges in autumn or spring.

What to expect when it arrives

It comes as tube stock and in 140mm pots sold in packs of ten. Tubes cover a larger area economically but take a season to knit together. The 140mm pack is quicker, covering about 0.4 square metres at 20cm spacing.

Cushions look flattened out of the box and lift within a week. Water daily for the first fortnight, then ease back. Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery. Every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

Can I walk on it?

Light, occasional foot traffic, yes. It is not a lawn substitute for a path used every day.

Why has the middle of my patch gone brown?

Usually humidity and poor drainage, not drought. Improve airflow, ease back on watering, and replant the healthy outer sections in spring or autumn.

Is it safe for dogs?

Yes, it is not toxic to cats or dogs. It will wear thin under heavy paw traffic, so use it beside the route rather than on it.
