Galactic Traveller Agave

Galactic Traveller Agave (Agave 'Galactic Traveller') is a variegated agave grown for foliage rather than flowers, forming a broad rosette around 90cm tall and 1.2m across. Wide blue green leaves carry irregular cream margins that hold their contrast all year, in full sun, with almost no water. Feature and poolside planting. A single rosette in a gravel bed or beside a pool gives structure without dropping leaves into the water. Allow at least 1.2m of clear width per plant so the shape is not cut off by a neighbour.

Pots, rockeries and coastal gardens. A wide pot of 500mm or more with a free draining succulent mix suits it, and terracotta beats plastic because it lets the mix dry. Planted through rock or gravel on a slope it gets the drainage it wants and holds its own against salt wind.

Growing Galactic Traveller Agave in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun. Shade dulls the variegation and loosens the rosette. It suits warm temperate, subtropical, arid and Mediterranean gardens, and tolerates light frost only, so hard frosting inland and cold southern gardens need a pot that can move under eaves. A long humid wet season is its weak point.

Soil. Drainage matters more than fertility. Sandy, gritty or rocky ground is ideal. On clay, plant on a raised mound and mix coarse gravel through the backfill. Do not mulch against the base, because trapped moisture causes crown rot.

Water and feed. Water every week or two through the first summer only, to settle the roots. After that it needs almost nothing. A light dose of controlled release fertiliser in spring is plenty, and overfeeding produces soft growth that spoils the form.

Pruning and handling. No pruning is required. Cut old lower leaves off flush with the stem when they brown. Wear gloves and long sleeves when you work on it, because the sap is a skin irritant.

What to expect when it arrives

It is grown in 200mm, sold in a pack of 6, and 250mm, sold in a pack of 3. Both are young rosettes rather than mature plants, and agaves are slow: expect three to five years to reach a metre across, and longer in a pot. The variegation is readable from day one.

Common questions

Does it die after flowering?

Agaves flower once at the very end of a long life, then the parent rosette declines. That is normal and usually takes well over a decade. Offsets around the base carry the planting on.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Treat it with care. The sap is a skin irritant and the leaves are firm with pointed tips, so keep it out of narrow paths and away from play areas. It is a plant to look at, not brush past.

How much water does it really need?

Very little once established. Overwatering is the most common way these plants are killed, particularly in clay or in a pot without drainage holes. If in doubt, wait another week.
