Fire Alarm Heuchera

Fire Alarm Heuchera (Heuchera 'Fire Alarm') is grown for its leaves, not its flowers. It forms a tidy mound about 40cm high and 40cm across in a brick red that holds through the year rather than fading to green by midsummer. Slender white flower spikes rise above the foliage in the warmer months, a bonus rather than the point. It is also not toxic to cats or dogs.

Pruning and division. Cut tired leaves off at the base in late winter to make room for the new flush, and remove spent flower spikes. Divide the clump every three or four years to keep it vigorous.

Morning sun with afternoon shade gives the best result. Full sun in a hot inland or northern garden bleaches and crisps the leaf edges, while deep shade dulls the red down towards bronze.
