Calappa Palm

The Calappa Palm (Actinorhytis calapparia) is a slender feather palm from the rainforests of New Guinea and the Pacific islands, grown for a full crown of long arching fronds above a clean ringed trunk. Growing Calappa Palm in Australia

Position and climate. This is a tropical and subtropical palm, and it is frost tender, so it is not an option for cool temperate, Mediterranean or hard frosting inland gardens. Young palms prefer filtered light for their first year or two, then take full sun once the trunk is up.

Soil. Deep, rich and free draining, with plenty of compost worked through the bed. It will not thrive in shallow or compacted ground, and it dislikes standing water.

Pruning. Remove only fully brown fronds, cut close to the trunk. Trimming green fronds to tidy the crown weakens the palm and slows growth.

Will it grow in Sydney, Melbourne or Perth?

Not in the open ground. It is frost tender and suited to tropical and subtropical gardens, so anywhere with cold winters it would need a heated glasshouse rather than a garden bed.

How close to a pool can I plant it?
