The second decision is evergreen versus deciduous: crepe myrtles and Japanese maples give autumn colour and winter sun where an evergreen wall would shade the house all year.

Prune spring flowering shrubs straight after flowering and summer performers like crepe myrtles in late winter. In Perth and Adelaide, improve sandy soil with compost at planting and expect to water more often in February than the east coast does.
