Blue Glow Agave

Blue Glow Agave (Agave 'Blue Glow') is the designer succulent that looks lit from within: a compact rosette of smooth blue green blades, each edged in a fine ribbon of red and gold that ignites when the sun is behind it. It holds a tidy 45cm by 60cm, one of the most refined agaves you can buy, and it delivers that polish in poor soil, drought, heat and salt wind with almost nothing asked in return.

Borders and mass planting. Rows or grids at 600mm centres along paths and driveways give crisp repetition with no upkeep.

Positioning note. The leaf tips carry a sharp spine and the sap can irritate skin, so set it back from path edges and play areas, and wear gloves when handling.

Growing Blue Glow Agave in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun for the best colour and tightest form; it takes light part shade. It thrives in arid, Mediterranean, warm temperate and drier subtropical gardens. It handles light frost only, so in cold districts grow it in pots and shift under cover through winter.

Soil. Sharp drainage is everything: sandy or gravelly beds in the ground, cactus and succulent mix in pots. Wet winter feet are the one killer.

Water and feed. Water fortnightly through the first summer, then monthly at most. Skip fertiliser; lean conditions keep the rosette compact and the colour strong.

Maintenance. Remove the odd spent lower leaf. That is the entire routine.

Common questions

How do I get the glowing edge effect?

Plant it where the sun sits low behind it from your main viewing angle, morning east light or late west light. The translucent margin does the rest.

Does it die after flowering like other agaves?

Yes, but not soon. Blue Glow typically grows for well over a decade before sending up its single flower spike, and the show along the way is the point.

Is it safe around pets and children?

Treat it with respect: the leaf tips are sharp and the sap can irritate skin. It is not a plant for a play lawn edge, but at a step back from traffic it causes no trouble.

Can I grow it indoors?

Only beside the sunniest glass in the house, and it will still be happier outside. Low light stretches the rosette and dulls the colour permanently.
