Position and climate. Full sun, and plenty of it. Six hours is the minimum and eight is better, because shade gives leaves and no colour. Common questions

Why is my bougainvillea all leaves and no colour?

Almost always too much shade, too much water or too much nitrogen. Move it into full sun, cut watering back so the mix dries between drinks, and switch to a low nitrogen fertiliser.

Does it have thorns?

Yes. Like every bougainvillea it carries short sharp spines along the stems, so it is not the plant for a narrow path or where children play. Gloves are worth having for pruning.

Will it handle frost?

No. It is frost tender and a hard frost will cut it back or kill it. In cold districts keep it potted and move it against a warm wall for the coldest months.
