This Backyard Farmer net is a 2.5m by 2.5m square of white UV resistant HDPE with a 5mm by 5mm diamond mesh, sized to go over a fruit tree, a berry frame or a vegetable bed. The fine mesh is the point: tight enough to keep birds off ripening fruit, to comply with household fruit netting laws and to reduce the risk of entanglement.
Net over a frame rather than draping the net straight onto the plant. Stakes, hoops or a simple timber frame tall enough to hold the mesh clear of the foliage will do, then stretch the 2.5m square taut across it. A taut net is both more effective and much safer for wildlife than a loose one.
Secure the edges with ties, clips or weights so there is no gap at ground level for birds to walk in under. Check it through the season, pull it tight again where it has sagged and repair any tear straight away. Take it down and store it dry once the crop is picked and it will give you several seasons.
Use over fruit trees and berries. One 2.5m square covers a small to medium fruit tree, or a compact frame over a berry patch.
Use over vegetable beds and seedlings. The same sheet works stretched over a raised bed to keep birds off newly sown ground and young seedlings.
