Growing Malay Dwarf Coconut in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun in tropical and frost free subtropical gardens. It is strictly frost tender: one hard frost can kill it, so it belongs on the warm coastal strip, never temperate or inland gardens. In the subtropics it grows well but fruits unreliably; dependable coconuts are a tropics only outcome.

Soil. Free draining sand or loam. It is a high water user while establishing, but cold water standing around the roots in winter is the enemy.

Water and feed. Water deeply and often through the first two summers, and keep water up in dry spells; coconuts are thirstier than most palms. Feed in spring and midsummer with a palm fertiliser containing trace elements.

Pruning. Remove only fully browned fronds, cutting close to the trunk without damaging it. Never trim green fronds for tidiness, because the palm feeds from them.

Common questions

Will it produce coconuts in Brisbane?

Occasionally, but not reliably. South East Queensland is at the margin: the palm grows well there, but consistent fruiting needs true tropical warmth. Buy it in the subtropics for the look, and treat any nuts as a bonus.

How cold can it go?

It is frost tender, and long cool winters stunt it even without frost. If your area sees frost at all, this is not the palm for you.

Is it safe to plant near a pool?

Yes, the roots are fibrous and non invasive, and this dwarf selection keeps the crown lower than tall coconuts. Position it so fronds and any nuts drop onto garden rather than water, and remove maturing nuts over walkways.
