Fine Leaf Palm (Dypsis plumosa) is the palm to choose when you want softness rather than bulk. It reaches about 7m tall and 3m wide over many years on a single slender trunk, and its fronds are plumose: the leaflets sit at several angles rather than one flat plane, so the canopy reads as feathery from across the garden.

Growing Fine Leaf Palm in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun grows the fullest crown, and this is a plant for tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. Being frost tender, it needs a pot that can shift under cover in cold inland districts, the tablelands and frosting southern gardens.

Soil. Free draining above all else. Work compost through the backfill on sand, mound the planting hole on heavy clay, and mulch 75mm deep kept clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first summer, then settle into a moderate routine. A controlled release palm fertiliser in early spring and again in mid summer keeps the fronds dark green; yellowing on the oldest fronds usually means hunger, not disease.

Pruning. Remove only fronds that have gone fully brown, cutting clear of the trunk. Taking green fronds to tidy the crown weakens the palm, because that crown is its only growing point.
