Darcyi Shampoo Ginger

Darcyi Shampoo Ginger (Zingiber zerumbet 'Darcyi') is the variegated form of shampoo ginger, and it is grown for the foliage first: long arching leaves boldly striped in cream against mid green, on canes reaching about 1.5m tall and 1.2m wide. Through summer it sends up green cones from the base that flush deep red as they mature, with small cream flowers emerging from between the bracts. In a shaded tropical bed it does more work than almost anything else at the same price.

Position and climate. Partial shade is ideal; full sun bleaches and scorches the variegation. It is frost tender and suits tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. In warm temperate and cooler subtropical gardens it dies back to the rhizome and returns in spring. Leave the clump undisturbed, ease off the watering and wait for the new shoots.
