Man Size Camellia (Camellia japonica 'Man Size') is, despite the name, one of the most compact japonicas you can buy, building slowly to about 2m tall and 1.5m wide. Through the cooler months it covers itself in small white blooms of miniature anemone form, each one crisp against the glossy evergreen foliage. Slow growth and a tidy habit make it the japonica for pots, small gardens and low hedges that other camellias outgrow.

Why you'll love it

  • Small flowers, big effect. The miniature anemone form blooms are borne freely, so the shrub reads as a sheet of white rather than a scatter of large flowers.
  • A camellia that keeps its scale. Slow growth to about 2m means it fits beside paths, under windows and in courtyards for decades.
  • Winter performance. The display arrives through the cooler months, holding colour when summer shrubs have gone quiet.
  • Safe around pets. Camellias are not toxic to cats or dogs, a genuine point of difference among flowering shrubs.
  • Evergreen polish. The deep green, glossy foliage looks deliberate all year, with frost, humidity and wind all tolerated.

Where it works best

Pots and containers. A 400mm or wider pot suits it for years, making it the reliable evergreen flowering choice for shaded terraces and entries.

Low hedging. Plant 1m apart for a dense informal hedge that settles around head height at maturity, with no fight to hold it there.

Small gardens, borders and feature spots. The slow, compact habit keeps it in proportion in townhouse beds, and a single specimen in flower carries a shaded corner through winter.

Position and climate. Morning sun or dappled light with shelter from hot afternoon sun grows the best plants; in cooler districts it takes more sun. It suits cool temperate, warm temperate and subtropical gardens, and it is fully frost hardy.

Soil. Slightly acidic, well drained soil rich in organic matter. Work compost through the bed before planting and mulch to keep the shallow roots cool. In pots, use a camellia and azalea mix.

Water and feed. Keep water steady through the first two summers and while buds are forming. Feed with a camellia and azalea fertiliser after flowering, and again lightly in early summer.

Pruning. Little is required. Trim lightly just after flowering if shaping a hedge, and remove any inward growing shoots. Slow growth means a cut lasts.

What to expect when it arrives

We sell Man Size Camellia in 200mm pots supplied as a pack of 6, the practical format for a low hedge or repeated border planting, with a single 300mm size listed on backorder between batches. Camellias are slow by nature, so plants arrive well furnished for their pot size and build steadily rather than leaping away. Some bud or flower drop after transit is normal and no cause for alarm.

Plants are packed to travel upright and delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How big does it actually get?

Expect about 2m tall and 1.5m wide, reached slowly over many years. Very old specimens can nudge a little higher, but this is a camellia chosen precisely because it stays compact.

Why are the flowers small?

'Man Size' is a miniature anemone form variety: each bloom is small, neat and ruffled at the centre, and the shrub compensates with sheer quantity. Massed small flowers also shrug off weather better than large petalled varieties.

Can I grow it in a pot long term?

Yes, it is one of the best camellias for containers thanks to its slow growth. Use a 400mm or larger pot, a camellia and azalea mix, and repot every three to four years. Keep the pot out of hot afternoon sun.

Is it safe for pets?

Yes. Camellias are not toxic to cats or dogs, so it is a safe flowering shrub for family gardens and shared courtyards where pets browse.
