Japanese spindle

Japanese Spindle (Euonymus japonicus) is the shrub for a formal hedge that stays sharp without constant attention. Left alone it makes a rounded evergreen about 3m tall and 2m wide, though most gardeners hold it between 1m and 1.5m with two trims a year. The leaves are small, thick and high gloss, so a clipped face catches the light the way box does, but the plant behind it is tougher: frost hardy, salt tolerant and untroubled by a dry, windy boundary.

Growing Japanese Spindle in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun gives the tightest growth; part shade means a looser hedge. It suits warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens and handles frost unprotected. In the humid subtropics and tropics the still, wet air brings on leaf spotting, so choose a hedge better adapted to humidity.

Soil. Not fussy about type as long as water moves through. It copes with thin, poor ground but sulks in a wet spot, so mound the position on heavy clay. Mulch 75mm deep, kept clear of the stems.

Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first summer, then step back. Once established it is genuinely drought tolerant. A controlled release fertiliser in early spring and again in late summer keeps the colour strong.

Pruning. Start tipping from the day you plant rather than waiting for height, because early trimming builds density low down. After that, two cuts a year hold the shape: one after the spring flush, one in late summer.
