The Terrazzo Wok Bowl is a wide, shallow bowl planter: a fibreglass core wrapped in a real terrazzo shell, roughly a quarter of the weight of traditional terrazzo. It comes in seven sizes and eleven finishes, from 30cm across up to a 110cm centrepiece. A bowl this shallow is made for surface interest: succulents, alpines and low massed planting.
Why you'll love it
-
Built for the plants that suit it. Succulents, sedums and rockery plants do better in a bowl than in a deep pot holding wet mix below the roots.
-
Very light for the width. The 30cm bowl is 500g and the 110cm is 16kg, which makes a metre wide feature bowl practical on a deck.
-
Eleven finishes. Standard terrazzo, or a Dulux Weathershield custom spray with a 15 year guarantee against blistering, peeling and flaking.
Sizes and what fits in them
Seven sizes, as outside diameter by height.
-
30 x 9cm to 50 x 13cm, 2 to 12 litres. Table top succulent arrangements, a small cactus group or a low fern indoors.
-
60 x 18cm and 70 x 25cm, 30 and 65 litres. A mixed succulent bowl with real depth, a rockery planting, or seasonal colour.
-
85 x 30cm and 110 x 40cm, 110 and 240 litres. Feature bowls: a broad clipped ball, a group of grasses, or dense low planting.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. A fibreglass core carries the structure, the terrazzo shell the surface. Empty weights run 0.5kg, 1kg, 3kg, 5kg, 7kg, 11kg and 16kg.
Outdoors. Dulux Weathershield custom spray colours carry a 15 year guarantee against blistering, peeling and flaking, and almost any Dulux or Colorbond colour is sprayed to order for an extra $60. We publish no frost rating, so keep smaller bowls under cover in hard frosting districts.
Drainage. Keep the drainage holes clear and stand the bowl on feet. Cover each hole with fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clogs. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix rather than garden soil. A shallow bowl dries faster than a deep pot, so check it often in summer.
What to expect when it arrives
Bowls ship empty and unplanted, packed to travel. The standard terrazzo finish is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days, while custom spray colours are made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. Orders are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. The 110 x 40cm wants two people carrying it even at 16kg.
