StoneLite Cylinder

The StoneLite Cylinder is a straight sided pot cast in glass-reinforced concrete, made in eight sizes from 30cm across and 30cm high, holding 20 litres, up to 100cm across and 100cm high, holding 785 litres. Every size is as tall as it is wide, so proportions hold as you scale up, and it gives the look of solid concrete at about a third of the weight.

Why you'll love it

• The proportions repeat. Because diameter matches height in every size, a group of three or four reads as a set rather than odds and ends.
• Straight sides hold more. A 56cm cylinder takes 140 litres, well ahead of a tapered pot of the same face width.
• Reinforced casting. Glass reinforcement takes the knocks that crack ordinary pots.
• Eleven finishes. Raw concrete or a Dulux Weathershield custom spray, guaranteed 15 years against blistering, peeling and flaking. Almost any Dulux or Colorbond colour is available for an extra $60.

Sizes and what fits in them

Eight sizes, quoted as outside diameter by height. Aggressive roots will damage any planter, so choose accordingly.

• 30cm to 42cm, 20 to 60 litres. Herbs, succulents, clipped balls and a single upright plant for a doorway or balcony.
• 48cm to 56cm, 87 to 140 litres. Shrubs, dwarf citrus and strappy leaf plants, and the usual choice for a repeated row.
• 75cm to 100cm, 330 to 785 litres. Trees and advanced stock. The 100cm cylinder is 82kg empty, so position it first and fill it in place.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Glass-reinforced concrete throughout, from 5kg empty at 30cm to 82kg at 100cm.

Outdoors. Made for outdoor positions. The sprayed colours use Dulux Weathershield with a 15 year guarantee against blistering, peeling and flaking; raw concrete is supplied unsprayed.

Drainage. It has drainage holes. Keep them clear and raise the pot on feet so water escapes freely. Cover each hole with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then premium potting mix, never garden soil. Indoors, use a saucer.

What to expect when it arrives

Cylinders ship empty, packed to travel. Raw concrete is dispatched in 2 to 5 business days; custom spray colours are made to order, so allow 2 to 3 weeks. They are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Quoted sizes are outside dimensions, so a 42cm cylinder takes a nursery pot slightly under 42cm.
