StoneLite Ball Planter

The StoneLite Ball Planter is a low, rounded bowl cast from glass-reinforced concrete, so it reads as solid concrete at about a third of the weight. It comes in five sizes, from a 28 x 21cm bowl at 2kg up to a 110 x 72cm piece at 50kg, in 11 finishes. The wide, shallow shape suits a clipped ball, an agave or a spilling planting.

Why you'll love it

• Concrete looks, a third of the weight. Glass reinforcement lets the wall be cast thin, so the 54 x 40cm bowl lands at 9kg, and it shrugs off knocks that crack an ordinary cast pot.
• Eleven finishes, one shape. Raw Concrete, plus White on White, Neutral Grey, Shale Grey, Concrete, Monument, Charcoal, Night Sky, Pale Eucalyptus, Terracotta and Paperbark Half.
• A paint system with a guarantee. The custom-spray colours are Dulux Weathershield, with a 15 year guarantee against blistering, peeling and flaking. Almost any other Dulux or Colorbond colour is available to order for an extra $60.

Sizes and what fits in them

All measurements are outside diameter by height.

• 28 x 21cm, 9 litres, 2kg. A table or step bowl for succulents.
• 40 x 30cm, 26 litres, 5kg. A compact clipped ball, a low grass or a mixed succulent planting.
• 54 x 40cm, 60 litres, 9kg. The everyday feature size, with volume for a shrub or small topiary.
• 82 x 57cm at 28kg, and 110 x 72cm at 50kg. Statement bowls for an entry or courtyard corner. No soil volume is published for either, and both need two people to place.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Glass-reinforced concrete, cast and finished by hand, so expect small variations in tone and surface.

Outdoors. The sprayed finishes carry the Weathershield guarantee. We do not publish a frost rating, so in hard frosting districts stop water sitting in the bowl or under it.

Drainage. It has drainage holes: keep them clear and raise the bowl on feet so water escapes freely. Cover the holes with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clogs. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix, never garden soil.

What to expect when it arrives
