The Pompeii Deep Bowl is a rounded bowl planter in hand crafted, double fired ceramic, carrying the black and white volcanic texture of the Pompeii range. It comes in four sizes, from 24 x 16cm to 53 x 35cm, quoted as outside dimensions. Where a standard bowl runs shallow, this one keeps the profile but gives roots real depth, which makes it the choice for a planting you intend to keep.
Why you'll love it
-
Bowl shape, real depth. The 53 x 35cm size is deeper than most decorative bowls, so plants are not fighting for root room.
-
Hand finished volcanic texture. The surface varies between pieces, which gives the range its aged character.
-
Double fired ceramic. The second firing builds the depth in the finish.
-
Drainage holes as standard. A rounded base holds water if it is not drilled, and this one is.
Sizes and what fits in them
Given as diameter by height, measured outside, so allow a little less inside.
-
24 x 16cm. A tabletop bowl. Succulents, a small fern, or 140mm nursery stock.
-
32 x 21cm. The everyday size. Takes 200mm stock, a compact foliage plant, or a mixed herb planting.
-
42 x 28cm. Room for 250mm stock, a small clipped shrub, or a grouping with something trailing over the rim.
-
53 x 35cm. The largest, and deep enough for a long term planting: an established shrub, a small palm, or massed grasses.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Hand crafted, double fired ceramic. Each bowl is finished by hand, so the pattern shifts from piece to piece.
Outdoors. It suits both indoor and outdoor positions. We do not rate the range as frost proof, so in frost prone gardens move the 24cm and 32cm sizes under cover through winter.
Drainage. There are drainage holes, and keeping them clear is the whole job. Raise the bowl on feet outdoors, cover the holes with one layer of fibreglass flyscreen (never fabric or geofabric, which clog), add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then fill with premium potting mix rather than garden soil. Indoors, stand it on a saucer.
What to expect when it arrives
Bowls ship empty and unplanted, wrapped for transit, and are dispatched in 2 to 5 business days. The pattern on your 42 x 28cm bowl will differ from the photographs. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Ceramic this size is heavy once filled, so decide where it lives first.
