The Pompeii Egg Planter is a rounded, egg profile pot in hand crafted, double fired ceramic, finished in the black and white volcanic texture that runs through the Pompeii range. It is made in five sizes, from 19 x 19cm to 55 x 48cm, quoted as outside dimensions. The egg shape is the most forgiving in the range: it carries an upright plant or a trailing one equally well.

  • 36 x 34cm. The everyday size, taking 200mm to 250mm stock: a peace lily or a compact cordyline.
  • 45 x 42cm. Room for 300mm stock, so dwarf shrubs, a small palm, or a clipped ball beside an entry.
  • 55 x 48cm. The feature size, for when the pot should be seen before the plant is.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Hand crafted, double fired ceramic. Because each pot is finished by hand, the pattern differs from piece to piece.

Outdoors. The range suits indoor and outdoor positions. We do not rate it as frost proof, so in frost prone districts move the 19cm and 25cm sizes under cover through winter.

Drainage. It has drainage holes and they need to stay clear. Raise the pot on feet, cover the holes with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen (never fabric or geofabric, both clog), add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then fill with premium potting mix rather than garden soil. Choose plants suited to containers: aggressive root systems damage any planter eventually. Indoors, stand the pot on a saucer.
