The Nylex Digital Weather Station Plus is a wireless home weather monitor with a proper wind sensor, the part cheaper stations leave out. The outdoor sensor sends temperature, humidity and wind data back to a large LCD console up to 100 metres away, line of sight. It turns guesswork about frost, heat and wind into numbers from your own block rather than the airport.

What it does

  • Wind measured properly. Current speed, gust speed and a stored top wind speed record let a storm be judged afterwards rather than estimated.
  • Inside and outside together. Temperature and humidity are shown for both, with trend indicators showing which way each is moving.
  • The Feels Like reading. Outdoor temperature is combined with wind speed to give a perceived figure, alongside dew point, wind chill and heat index data.
  • Forecast, alerts and history. A weather forecast, HI and LO alert alarms and 24 hours of stored data are handled by the console.

How to use it

Mount the outdoor sensor in an open position, clear of walls, eaves and dense foliage, because a sensor under cover reads the shelter around it rather than the garden. Keep the console within the 100 metre transmission range, and remember that figure is line of sight. The console measures 260mm deep, 140mm wide and 135mm high, so allow shelf space accordingly. Wipe the display gently with a dry cloth, and set the high and low alarms to thresholds that matter to you, such as a frost warning or the heat your tender plants will not take.

Timing garden jobs. Wind readings tell you when not to spray, and temperature and humidity trends tell you when to water.

Protecting tender plants. A low alarm warns of a cold night, which is the difference between covering frost sensitive plants and finding them burnt in the morning.

Larger blocks. The wireless range reaches a back paddock or the far corner of an acreage garden, so the reading comes from where the plants are. Tools are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
