The Nylex 150mm Rain Gauge measures rainfall up to 150mm in 1mm graduations, so the decision to water or leave the garden alone rests on a number rather than a guess. It stands 345mm high on a 96mm by 100mm body, reads clearly from a few paces away, and is built to stay outside permanently.

What it does

  • Reads to 1mm. Clear 1mm graduations up to 150mm, with markings large enough to read without crouching over it.
  • Separates the storm from the soaking. Ten loud minutes of rain can deliver 2mm and change nothing at root depth. The gauge tells you which kind of rain you actually got.
  • Made to live outdoors. Fixed placement and permanent outdoor use, so it goes in once and stays there through the season.
  • Compact. 96mm wide, 345mm high and 100mm deep, small enough to sit in a garden bed or on a fence line without dominating it.

How to use it

Position it in the open, away from trees, eaves, walls and fences. Anything overhead intercepts rain before it lands, and both that and a wall beside it make the reading come in low. Read it at the same time each day and empty it after every reading, so the next figure is a single event rather than a running total. Rinse it occasionally to keep the markings clear.

Use the numbers to adjust irrigation rather than to switch it off. Established garden beds often need nothing after decent rain, while pots and new plantings still do, because a canopy sheds most of what falls on it away from the rootball.
