Callistemon Snow Burst

Callistemon 'Snow Burst' (Callistemon hybrid) is the white bottlebrush for gardeners who want the birds without the red. It settles at about 1.5m tall and 1.5m wide, small enough for a front garden hedge and low enough that it never needs a ladder. Position and climate. Full sun for the heaviest flowering. It is comfortable across tropical, subtropical, warm temperate and cool temperate gardens, a wider range than most bottlebrushes, and frost hardy once established. Part shade grows well, but flowers thin out.

Soil. Not fussy. It performs in poor ground, in clay, and in soil that stays damp after rain. The only real failure point is a pot without drainage. Mulch 75mm deep, clear of the stem.

Water and feed. Water twice a week through the first summer to get the roots down, after which it is genuinely drought tolerant. Use a low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring, and avoid high phosphorus products.

Pruning. Trim lightly straight after each flowering flush, taking the spent brushes and about a third of the new growth. That is what keeps a bottlebrush compact rather than open and woody. It reshoots from old wood, so a neglected plant can be cut hard in spring.

What to expect when it arrives

This variety is grown in tube stock. Tubes are young single stemmed plants, well under knee height, and they are the sensible choice for a long hedge: low cost per plant, and small natives establish faster than advanced ones. Expect two to three seasons to a closed hedge, not instant screening.

Common questions

How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?

One metre apart in a single row. Closer planting does not close the gap any faster, and only makes watering and feeding harder as the roots compete.

Can I keep it smaller than 1.5m?

Yes. Two light trims a year, taken right after flowering, hold it around 1m without stripping the plant of buds. Cutting at the wrong time removes next season's flowers.

Does it cope with frost and with a wet part of the garden?

Both, which is unusual. It is frost hardy once established and rated wet feet tolerant, so waterlogging after heavy rain will not kill it. Permanently standing water is still too much for any shrub.
