The Atlantis High Bowl is a wide, shallow hand-made Vietnamese ceramic bowl in two sizes, 50 x 20cm holding 15L and 58 x 25cm holding 20L. It is double-fired for frost resistance and finished in a richly textured aged glaze, so each bowl carries its own colouring. A bowl this wide and low is for planting you look down into rather than up at.
Why you'll love it
-
Built for low, spreading planting. Nearly 60cm of surface on 25cm of depth suits succulents, alpines and anything that runs sideways instead of up.
-
An aged glaze that weathers like a relic. The texture reads as age rather than finish, and no two bowls are alike.
-
Double-fired for frost resistance. The second firing tightens the clay body, so it stays outdoors through a cold winter.
-
Solid for its size. At 15kg and 25kg empty, a wide, lightly planted bowl is not going anywhere in a gust.
Sizes and what fits in them
Both measurements are outside, width by height.
-
50 x 20cm, 15L, 15kg. A tight succulent arrangement, colour by a doorstep, or a single sculptural plant with gravel around it.
-
58 x 25cm, 20L, 25kg. Enough width for a mixed low planting: three or four 140mm plants with room to spread into each other.
At 20cm and 25cm high these are shallow vessels, so shrubs and trees that want deep root run belong in a taller pot.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Hand-made ceramic from Vietnam, double-fired and glazed by hand, so colour depth and texture vary between pieces.
Outdoors. Double firing gives the frost resistance, and the aged glaze mellows outside rather than staying uniform. Raise the bowl on feet so water can escape freely.
Drainage. It has drainage holes and they must be kept clear. A shallow bowl holds a wetter root zone than a deep pot, so free drainage matters. Cover the holes with a single layer of fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add a 50mm layer of 10mm gravel, then a quality premium potting mix, never garden soil. Under cover, use a saucer.
What to expect when it arrives
Bowls ship empty and unplanted, packed to travel upright, and are dispatched in 2 to 5 business days. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. The 58 x 25cm bowl is 25kg empty, so decide where it lives before you fill it. Choose plants suited to containers, since aggressive roots can damage any planter.
