The Atlantis Dipping Jar is a squat, wide bellied ceramic jar, handmade in Vietnam and double fired, carrying the textured aged glaze the Atlantis range is known for. It is made in one size, 40cm across and 32cm tall, holding 20 litres. It is wider than it is high, so it sits low and steady and reads as an object in its own right.

The Dipping Jar comes in one size, measured outside rather than at the opening.

  • 40cm x 32cm, 20 litres. Room for a compact shrub, a dwarf citrus, a clipped ball, or a strappy leaf plant that will arch out over the shoulder.
  • 16kg empty. Enough weight to hold its position unplanted, so it also works as a standalone piece beside steps.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Handmade ceramic from Vietnam, double fired, finished in an aged glaze applied by hand. Colour, texture and edge wear vary from piece to piece.

Outdoors. Frost resistance comes from the double firing, so a planted jar can be left out through winter. The finish is meant to weather, so the patina settles into the glaze. It is still ceramic, so keep it on level ground.

Drainage. Keep the drainage holes clear and raise the jar on feet so water runs away freely. Screen the holes with fibreglass flyscreen, never fabric or geofabric, which clog. Add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then a premium potting mix, never garden soil. Indoors it needs a saucer.

Pots ship empty and unplanted, wrapped and boxed for freight. At 40cm x 32cm and 16kg it is a one person carry, though filled with wet mix it is another matter, so place it first and plant it second.
