Yates Gnat Barrier is a 4.5L bag of natural pumice granules that sits on top of the potting mix as a physical barrier against fungus gnats. The granules are abrasive, so adults cannot reach the damp surface to lay into it, and the same layer slows evaporation from the pot.

What it does

  • A barrier, not a spray. The granules work by texture alone. There is no active constituent, so nothing has to be mixed or measured.
  • Breaks the breeding cycle. Fungus gnats lay into moist mix at the surface. Covered with pumice, that surface is no longer available to them.
  • Holds moisture in the pot. The layer limits surface water loss, so the mix underneath dries down more slowly.
  • Natural pumice, chemical free. Yates describe it as a natural, chemical free product that is safe for plants, which is why it suits any pot kept indoors.

How to use it

Level the potting mix, then spread the granules evenly to a depth of at least 3cm. Anything shallower leaves thin patches that gnats will find. At that depth a 4.5L bag covers roughly 1,500 square centimetres, about two 300mm pots or half a dozen small ones.

Water as normal once the layer is down. Pumice lets water through and does not need pulling back first. Top up every few months wherever the layer has thinned or been disturbed by repotting.

Indoor pots. Houseplants watered on a schedule keep the mix surface damp for long stretches, which is exactly the condition fungus gnats look for.

Seedlings and young stock. Small root systems in constantly moist mix have the least in reserve, so covering trays protects them at the stage it matters most.
