Yates Specialty Potting Mix for Orchids is a 2.5L bag of small to medium grade coarse bark. Orchid roots need air as much as water, and a bark medium gives them both by draining freely and holding open space around the root. It carries a controlled release fertiliser feeding for up to six months, and one bag fills about two 14cm pots.

What it does

  • Air around the roots. The coarse bark grade leaves gaps that water drains through and air moves into, which is the opposite of what a fine potting soil does.
  • No standing water. Free drainage is the point of the blend, because orchid roots sitting wet are the usual reason a healthy plant declines.
  • Fed for half a year. Controlled release fertiliser is included and feeds for up to six months from potting.
  • Biostimulant included. The blend carries one to encourage healthy roots and steady growth.

How to use it

Hold the orchid in position and backfill gently with bark around the roots, working the pieces in with your fingers rather than pressing the plant down. Water thoroughly once potted and let the pot drain freely. A 2.5L bag fills roughly two 14cm pots, so a small collection is covered by one or two bags.

Repot when the roots have taken over the pot, which is also when the old bark has broken down and stopped draining. From there, water according to the orchid variety and your conditions, and reseal the stand-up bag so the rest of the bark stays dry.

What it suits

Potted orchids at repotting time. Most common varieties grown in containers are repotted into a bark medium of exactly this grade.

Indoor displays. An orchid on a bench or a windowsill holds condition in bark, because the medium never goes airless the way potting soil can.

Greenhouses and shade houses. Controlled spaces, where watering is frequent and drainage matters most, are well served by a coarse bark blend.

It is not a potting mix for anything else. Ordinary plants set into straight bark dry out and fall over, because bark has almost no body to hold them. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.
