The Tumbleweed Worm Buffet is an in ground worm farm that sits inside the garden bed rather than beside it, so the castings go into the soil around your plants instead of into a tray you have to empty. Once established it works through 1 to 2kg of kitchen scraps a week. It suits gardeners cutting household waste who also want a vegetable bed fed.

What it does

  • Feeds the soil directly. Worms travel in and out through the surrounding bed, so castings are released where the roots already are. Nothing needs harvesting or spreading.
  • Takes a household's scraps. It processes 1 to 2kg of kitchen waste each week once the worms are working.
  • Aerated locking lid. The green lid locks down and still lets air through, keeping conditions aerobic and the contents covered.
  • Snap together build. It assembles by hand with no tools, so it is in the ground and running in minutes.

How to use it

Set the unit into a garden bed or raised planter so the body sits below soil level and only the lid shows. Worms are not supplied: start with around 500 composting worms and give them time to settle before feeding heavily. After that, add kitchen scraps regularly and let the worms come and go on their own. There are no trays to lift and no castings to collect. If the kitchen produces more waste than one unit can absorb, install further units 1 to 1.5 metres apart rather than overloading a single one.

What it suits

Raised planters. Sinking a unit into the middle of a raised bed puts the feeding point among the crop, which is where the extra nutrition does the most work.

Established borders. In an open bed it sits below the mulch line and improves soil structure, fertility and aeration around it over the seasons.

Compact backyards. It uses no bench or path space, so it suits blocks where a standing bin is in the way. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

It is not the system for liquid fertiliser you can pour or bagged castings you can spread. A tray worm farm with a tap does that better.
