Scotts Osmocote Plus Tomato, Vegetable and Herb Premium Planting Mix is a 50L medium formulated for edible crops from planting through to harvest. It combines Osmocote controlled release fertiliser that feeds for up to five months with a genuine list of organic inputs: composted manure, blood and bone, seaweed, fish and molasses. Gypsum and active beneficial micro organisms round it out.

What it does

  • Five months of controlled release feeding. The Osmocote component releases nutrients steadily, which is the span a tomato or a bed of vegetables needs from seedling to picking.
  • Organic matter with real ingredients. Composted manure, blood and bone, seaweed, fish and molasses give it body and slow acting nutrition rather than a single soluble hit.
  • Gypsum for texture, not pH. Gypsum helps break up heavy soil and improve structure without shifting soil pH, so it will not upset an established bed.
  • Live soil biology. Active beneficial micro organisms are included to support nutrient availability and uptake at the root.

How to use it

Use it straight from the bag with no blending required. Fifty litres tops up a one metre square raised bed to a depth of about 50mm, or fills two 300mm pots, so measure your beds before ordering. Spread it, plant into it, and water thoroughly: the first watering activates the fertiliser and the micro organisms. In an existing bed, fork it through the top layer rather than laying it on as a blanket. After about five months the controlled release fertiliser is spent, so apply a fertiliser then if the crop is still running.

What it suits

Out in the garden. Raised beds and in ground vegetable plots, where the organic content improves structure and drainage as well as feeding the crop.
