Scotts Osmocote Plus 25L Tomato, Vegetable and Herb Premium Planting Mix is a rich, organic based planting mix for productive beds. It combines composted manure, blood and bone, seaweed, fish and molasses with Osmocote controlled release fertiliser feeding for up to five months. Gypsum adds calcium and opens up clay without shifting soil pH. The bag holds 25 litres.

What it does

  • Organic matter with real body. The organic components give the blend the substance a vegetable bed wants, not nutrition alone.
  • Five months of controlled release. Osmocote feeds steadily for up to five months from the day the mix goes into the ground.
  • Living soil. Active beneficial micro-organisms help plants take nutrient up rather than leaving it unavailable in the soil.
  • Clay broken open. Gypsum improves soil texture on heavy ground without altering pH, so an established bed is not thrown out of balance.

How to use it

Use it straight from the bag, in a garden bed or a container, with nothing added. Water thoroughly after planting, which activates the fertiliser and wakes the micro-organisms up.

In an in-ground or raised bed, spread the mix across the prepared area and fork it into the top of the existing soil rather than leaving a separate layer, so roots travel between the two. In pots, fill and plant. Twenty five litres fills roughly one 300mm pot, or works through a small bed section at planting depth. Feeding runs for up to five months, then reapply a suitable fertiliser if the crop is still going.

What it suits

In-ground vegetable beds. This is where the organic content earns its money, because it keeps improving the soil after the crop comes out.

Fruiting crops that need calcium. Tomatoes and capsicums are the usual casualties of blossom end rot, and the calcium carried in the gypsum is there to help prevent it.

Successive plantings. Lettuce, silverbeet and soft herbs sown in waves suit a steady five month feed better than a single heavy dose early on.
