Scotts Osmocote 25L Seed and Cutting Premium Potting Mix is a propagating medium for the two fiddliest jobs in the shed: getting seed up evenly, and getting cuttings to strike. It carries phosphorus for rooting, gypsum for calcium and coir for moisture, and is certified to the Australian Standard for premium potting mixes. The bag holds 25 litres.

What it does

  • Rooting comes first. Phosphorus encourages better root formation in seedlings and cuttings, which is the whole purpose of a propagating mix.
  • Structure in young tissue. Gypsum adds calcium, which seedlings and soft cuttings draw on while they are growing fastest.
  • Even moisture, not swings. Water crystals absorb and release moisture, and renewable coir holds water and nutrient, so trays do not run from sodden to bone dry between checks.
  • A gentle six month feed. Controlled release fertiliser feeds for up to six months at a rate balanced for developing roots, so seedlings can stay put.

How to use it

Fill trays, punnets or small pots, firm lightly, sow at the depth the seed packet specifies and water gently so the top is not washed out. For cuttings, insert the prepared stem, leaf or root cutting and keep it evenly moist from then on.

Hold consistent moisture without waterlogging. The water crystals carry a tray through a warm day, but a mix left standing wet rots cuttings before they strike. Keep everything warm and protected, and pot seedlings on once roots reach the edge of the cell.

What it suits

Vegetable and herb seed. Punnets sown in autumn or spring germinate into a fine, even bed, and the six month feed carries seedlings through to planting out.

Striking cuttings. Stem, leaf and root cuttings all take here, and the coir holds moisture around the base while roots form.

Under cover. A greenhouse, poly tunnel or bright protected bench is where the mix does its best work, because watering runs on your schedule rather than the weather's.
