Scotts Osmocote Orchid Premium Potting Mix is a 25 litre free draining blend of coir chips and graded composted pine bark, built to hold an orchid steady while letting water run away from its roots. It is formulated for terrestrial as well as epiphytic orchids, and it carries controlled release fertiliser that feeds for up to twelve months. This is the bag to buy when a whole collection is due for repotting.

What it does

  • Coir chips and graded pine bark. The two components together anchor the plant firmly and hold a reserve of moisture without turning the pot into a sponge.
  • Twelve months of feeding. Controlled release fertiliser keeps nutrient coming for a full year, so a plant potted in spring is still being fed the following spring.
  • Calcium in the blend. The addition supports pseudobulb development, flowering and improved disease resistance.
  • Wetting agent included. Bark based media repel water once they dry out, and the wetter keeps irrigation soaking through the pot rather than around the outside of it.

How to use it

Part fill the pot, sit the orchid at the height you want it, then backfill gently around the roots. When repotting, take the old mix off completely rather than potting on over the top of it, since spent bark is usually the reason the plant needed moving. Water thoroughly straight after potting to activate the wetting agent. After that, water to suit the orchid and its position: a plant in a warm greenhouse dries far faster than the same plant on an indoor shelf.

What it suits

Epiphytic and terrestrial types. Both groups can go into this mix, which is its practical advantage over a straight coarse bark blend.

Greenhouses and shade houses. Controlled environments are where most serious collections live, and 25 litres matches that scale of work.

Sheltered outdoor positions. Verandas, patios and shaded courtyards suit orchids in this medium, provided they sit out of driving rain and hard afternoon sun. Delivered Australia wide, with a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

It is not a general potting mix, and ordinary pot plants will do better in a finer, more water retentive product.
