Scotts Osmocote Garden Soil Premium Planting Mix is a 25 litre, 12 kilogram bag of composted planting medium made for garden beds rather than pots. It is built to rebuild depleted ground: gypsum to improve structure, a wetting agent to get water into the profile, and controlled release fertiliser that feeds for up to four months. It suits anyone topping up a raised bed that has slumped, or improving soil before a new planting.

What it does

  • Gypsum for structure. It improves soil texture and supplies calcium, which is what heavy or compacted ground is usually short of.
  • Wetting agent through the blend. Water and dissolved nutrient move down into the soil instead of running off ground that has dried hard.
  • Composted, with no animal by-products. It has a fresh earthy smell, so a bag can be opened near paths, entries and outdoor living areas.
  • Four months of controlled release feeding. New plantings are fed right through the establishment period without a separate fertiliser application.

How to use it

Loosen the existing soil with a fork before you start. As a topdressing on a raised bed that has settled, 25 litres covers about half a square metre at 50mm deep, so plan on several bags for a full bed. As a soil improver, spread it over the surface and turn it through the top 100mm to 150mm of existing soil, then water in. Reapply as the bed drops again. At 12 kilograms a bag it is light enough to carry to the far end of a garden without a barrow.

What it suits

In ground beds. Existing garden soil that has gone hard and lifeless responds quickly to organic matter turned through it.

Raised beds losing height. Every raised bed sinks as its contents break down, and topping up is ordinary maintenance rather than a sign something has gone wrong.

Vegetable growing. Productive beds strip nutrient out fast, so rebuilding between crops keeps yields up. Delivered Australia wide, with a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

It is not a potting mix. In a container it holds too much water and slumps, so keep a premium potting mix for pots and use this in the ground.
