Scotts Osmocote Seed and Cutting Premium Potting Mix is a propagating medium in a 10 litre bag, built for the two jobs that punish an ordinary potting mix: germinating seed and striking cuttings. It is free draining but holds moisture, and it feeds gently for up to six months rather than overwhelming young roots. It suits anyone raising vegetable, herb or flower seedlings, or rooting cuttings at home.

What it does

  • Phosphorus for root initiation. The blend is built around getting roots away first, which is the entire task in a propagating medium.
  • Gypsum supplying calcium. Early growth and plant structure depend on it, and seedlings raised short of calcium stay soft and weak.
  • Water crystals and coir together. One absorbs and releases moisture as a tray dries, the other holds water and nutrient in the body of the mix, so trays stay evenly damp.
  • Controlled release feeding for up to six months. Nutrient arrives slowly, which suits seedlings and cuttings that a strong liquid feed would scorch.

How to use it

For seed, fill trays or punnets, level the surface, sow, then water gently with a fine rose so seed is not washed out of place. Sowing depth and spacing vary by species, so follow the seed packet rather than a general rule. For cuttings, insert the prepared material and keep it evenly moist, never saturated: waterlogging kills more cuttings than anything else. Water lightly and often rather than heavily, and keep trays somewhere warm and protected while roots form.

What it suits

Seed trays and punnets. Vegetables, herbs and flowers all germinate in it, so a single bag covers the whole spring sowing.

Striking cuttings. Stem, leaf and root material take readily in this medium, whether in individual pots or a propagating tray.
