Osmocote Orchid Premium Potting Mix is a 10 litre free-draining medium made for orchid roots, which need air around them as much as they need water. It is built from coir chips and graded composted pine bark, and carries controlled release fertiliser for up to 12 months. It suits both epiphytic and terrestrial orchids.

What it does

  • Free draining, with air in the mix. Coarse chip and graded bark let excess water leave quickly while holding the water to air balance orchid roots need. Standard potting mix packs too tightly and suffocates them.
  • Anchors the plant. The coir chip and pine bark grade gives roots something to grip, which keeps a top heavy orchid steady in its pot without staking.
  • Added calcium. Supports pseudobulb development, flowering and disease resistance.
  • Feeds for up to 12 months. Controlled release fertiliser delivers gentle, balanced nutrition slowly, which suits roots that are easily burnt by a heavy feed. A wetting agent is included so water soaks in rather than running through.

How to use it

Fill the orchid pot with mix, sit the plant in position, and backfill gently around the roots without packing it down. Water thoroughly straight after potting to activate the wetting agent and settle the chip around the root mass.

When repotting, replace the old mix completely rather than topping it up. Bark based media break down over time, and it is that collapse into fine, airless material that kills more orchids than neglect does. Ten litres fills about one 200mm orchid pot with enough left for a 150mm pot alongside, or roughly five smaller 125mm pots. After that, water as the orchid type and your growing conditions require.
