Scotts Osmocote Orchid Coarse Potting Mix is a 10 litre bag of coarse orchid bark developed for epiphytic orchids, the ones that grow on trees rather than in soil. The chunky structure keeps air moving around the roots and lets water run straight through, and the blend carries boosted nitrogen and added calcium. Reach for it when potting or repotting Cattleyas, Oncidiums, Dendrobiums and their relatives.

What it does

  • Coarse bark structure. Large particles leave real air gaps between them, which is what epiphytic roots evolved for and what stops them suffocating in a pot.
  • Nitrogen for leaf and cane growth. Levels are boosted above a general purpose mix, supporting the vegetative growth that carries next season's flowers.
  • Calcium in the blend. The addition encourages firmer pseudobulbs, better flowers and improved disease resistance.
  • Wetting agent included. Bark sheds water once it dries out, and the wetter helps moisture and nutrient soak into the root zone instead of running past it.

How to use it

When repotting, gently remove the old mix from the roots first. Sit the plant in the pot, backfill around the roots, and settle the bark by tapping the pot rather than pressing down: compacting it destroys the air spaces you are paying for. Water lightly straight after potting to activate the wetting agent. Ten litres does roughly six 150mm orchid pots, or a smaller number of baskets, so count the containers before ordering.

What it suits

Pots and hanging baskets. Container grown orchids are what this mix is built around, indoors on a bright sill or outside under shade cloth.

Greenhouses and shade houses. Specialist setups get through bark quickly, and 10 litres matches a small collection or a single afternoon of work.

Routine repotting. Orchid media breaks down and stops draining as it ages, and replacing it on schedule matters more than any feeding regime. Delivered Australia wide, with a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

It is not a mix for general potting, and it holds too little water for plants that are not adapted to life on a tree branch.
