Richgro Natural Dolomite Lime is a mined soil conditioner that reduces acidity and supplies calcium and magnesium at the same time. Correcting pH matters more than most gardeners expect, because nutrients already in an acid soil stay locked away from roots until the pH comes back into range. Supplied in a 5kg bag, mined with no added chemicals.

What it does

  • Raises pH in acid soil. It reduces soil acidity and brings conditions back to a more balanced range, which improves what plants can take up from the soil they are in.
  • Two nutrients in one pass. Calcium supports strong cell structure and firm growth. Magnesium is what leaves use to build chlorophyll, so a shortage shows as yellowing on older foliage.
  • Helps organic matter break down. Better soil conditions encourage the formation of humus from the organic matter already in the bed.
  • Mined, with nothing added. A natural product, which is also why moisture content and appearance vary a little from bag to bag.

How to use it

Test your soil pH before you spread anything. Lime is quick to add and slow to undo, and there is no benefit in liming ground that is already neutral or alkaline. Use the rate printed on the bag and follow the label directions: the right amount depends on soil type and how far the pH has to move, so it is not a figure to estimate by eye.

Spread it evenly across the soil surface, work it lightly into the top few centimetres, and water it in. It is compatible with most fertilisers and can go on as part of a normal feeding round. Lime acts slowly, so re-test before deciding to add more.

What it suits

Use. Vegetable gardens, garden beds and lawns growing on acid soil, plus pots and raised beds where it can be blended through other fertilisers and soil mixes.

Not for acid loving plants. Azaleas, camellias, gardenias and blueberries want low pH and go backwards when it is lifted. Keep lime away from those beds and treat the rest of the garden separately.
