Richgro All Purpose Mushroom Compost is a soil conditioner and mulch made from recycled by-products of mushroom farming. It is rich in organic matter, so it lifts the structure of tired soil and holds moisture where roots can reach it. This 25 litre bag does two jobs: dug through a bed before planting, or laid on the surface as a mulch.

What it does

  • Organic matter for structure. Compost opens up compacted ground and gives sandy soil something to hold onto, the fix behind most poor garden beds.
  • Moisture held longer. The high organic content improves water retention, so beds dry out more slowly and need watering less often.
  • Feeds while it works. Beneficial nutrients release as the compost breaks down, feeding the soil steadily rather than in one sharp hit.
  • Made from a waste stream. The base material is recycled out of mushroom farming, so a by-product that would be discarded improves a garden instead.

How to use it

As a soil improver, spread the compost over the bed and mix it through the existing soil before planting. As a mulch, lay it over the surface around plants and keep it back off stems and trunks. Water well after either job so the compost settles and the nutrients start moving into the soil.
