Osmocote Scotts Compost Premium Soil Improver is a 25 litre bag of organically enriched compost with controlled release fertiliser already blended through it, and it meets the Australian Standard for Premium Composts. It is the bag to reach for when the soil itself is the problem: tired beds, sand that will not hold water, or long-cropped clay.

What it does

  • Organic matter returned. A premium compost base puts humus and nutrients back into ground that has been planted repeatedly, which rebuilds structure rather than just feeding the plant.
  • Soil life encouraged. Beneficial microbes and earthworms move back into a bed once there is compost in it, and that activity keeps texture and fertility improving.
  • Iron for yellowing foliage. Added iron sulphate helps correct the iron deficiency behind yellowing leaves.
  • Four months of feeding. Scotts Osmocote controlled release fertiliser is blended in and feeds for up to 4 months, so a freshly improved bed needs no separate feed on day one.

How to use it

Fork it through the top 150mm of a bed before planting, or spread it on the surface and let the worms take it down. As a guide, 25 litres covers about one square metre at 25mm deep, so a four square metre bed wants four bags for a worthwhile layer. The same bag fills a single 300mm pot with a little to spare, though it is a soil improver, not a potting mix, so blend it with a proper pot mix rather than using it alone. Water well afterwards.
