Whoflungdung is Neutrog's composted, biologically activated mulch, a fine dark mulch that feeds the soil while it covers it. One bag spreads about 3 square metres as a fresh layer, or about 6 square metres as a top-up over existing mulch. It is for gardeners who want mulch to do more than sit there looking tidy.

What it does

  • Composted, not raw chip. It breaks down into the topsoil instead of lying on it as an inert blanket.
  • Biologically activated. Neutrog state that activity carries the added nutrients into the bed rather than leaving them on the surface.
  • Reduced nitrogen draw-down. Fresh uncomposted mulches pull nitrogen out of the soil, and the plants around them go pale. This one is made to reduce that.
  • Steadier soil temperature. A covered bed swings less between a hot afternoon and a cold night, which keeps surface roots working. Neutrog also state it deters pathogenic bacteria in the soil.

How to use it

Weed the bed and water it first, because mulch laid over dry soil will keep light rain off it for weeks. Spread the bag evenly, working to about 3 square metres for a first mulch or about 6 square metres over an existing layer. That difference is your guide to thickness: a first application goes on roughly twice as thick as a top-up.

Keep it clear of stems and trunks. Mulch pushed hard against bark holds moisture where you least want it. Reapply once the layer thins enough that you can see soil through it.
