The Maze 2 Compartment Geared Compost Tumbler holds 180 litres across two chambers, so one side keeps taking kitchen scraps while the other finishes a batch. It turns on a geared crank handle and sits on an elevated steel stand, which is what separates it from a bin you fork out by hand. It suits a household that wants compost coming out steadily rather than once a season.

What it does

  • Two chambers working out of step. The barrel is split into a filling side and a maturing side, so today's scraps never reset a batch that is nearly ready.
  • Geared turning, not brute force. The crank rotates the barrel while it is loaded, and a ratchet lock stops it rolling backwards. That lock can be deactivated if you would rather turn freely.
  • Made to live outdoors. A UV protected barrel with multiple air vents, a galvanised and powder coated steel frame, and a stainless steel centre axle.
  • Clean emptying. The stand is high enough to slide a bucket or garden cart under the sliding doors, so finished compost comes out without shovelling.

How to use it

Load one compartment through its sliding door with kitchen and garden waste, then turn the crank every few days. Regular rotation and the vented barrel keep the mix aerobic, which speeds the process up and keeps it from going sour. When that side is full, start the second compartment and leave the first to mature, alternating from there. Rinse the barrel occasionally so residue does not build up. Allow for a footprint of 91cm wide by 64cm deep, standing 109cm high, plus room to swing the handle and park a bucket underneath.

Everyday kitchen waste. Peelings, trimmings and coffee grounds arrive daily, and the twin chamber system always has somewhere to put them.
