Garden Basics Water Saving Mulch is a 25 litre bagged mulch that handles the two jobs bare soil cannot do for itself: holding moisture in and keeping weeds out. Spread over the surface it minimises evaporation under normal weather conditions, so watering goes further, and it blocks the light weed seeds need. It is made for the whole garden, not one corner of it.

What it does

  • Holds moisture for longer. Covering the soil reduces evaporation, so water stays down where the roots are and the watering interval stretches out.
  • Suppresses weed growth. It limits the light reaching the soil surface, which stops most weed seeds before they germinate rather than after.
  • Keeps nutrients in place. It assists in retaining nutrients in the soil where plants can reach them.
  • Goes anywhere in the garden. Ornamental beds, vegetable gardens, and the root zone of established trees and shrubs.

How to use it

Water first, then mulch. Laying mulch over dry soil locks the dryness in, and that single mistake is why some gardeners see no benefit from mulching at all. Spread it evenly around plants at the usual garden depth of 50mm to 75mm, and pull it back clear of stems and trunks so the collar stays dry.

At 75mm deep a 25 litre bag covers about a third of a square metre, and at 50mm about half a square metre, so measure the bed and order to that rather than spreading one bag thin. A thin layer will not hold moisture or stop weeds. Top it up as the mulch breaks down into the soil.

What it suits

Use. Garden beds and borders, vegetable gardens, and the root zone around trees and shrubs. It earns its keep through a hot dry summer, when unmulched beds dry out first.

Not a growing medium. Mulch belongs on top of the soil, not dug into it and not used in a pot in place of potting mix. It also will not rescue a bed that was never improved, so dig a garden soil mix through first and mulch over the top.
