Garden Basics Garden Soil Mix is a ready to plant soil for beds, borders and landscaping, made to Australian Standard AS4454 for composts, soil conditioners and mulches. It works two ways: as a complete soil where there is nothing worth planting into, or dug through tired ground to lift fertility and drainage. The 25 litre bag weighs about 25kg, so plan on help to move it.

What it does

  • Plant straight into it. A finished soil, not a concentrate, so a new bed or a bare patch can be filled and planted the same day.
  • Improves what is already there. Dug through existing soil it lifts fertility and opens the structure, so water moves down instead of sitting on the surface.
  • Meets AS4454. The Australian Standard for composts, soil conditioners and mulches, so it is a graded product rather than unscreened fill.
  • Suits the whole garden. Ornamental plants, flowers, fruit and vegetables all grow in it, so one product covers the whole garden.

How to use it

Loosen the area first. Compacted ground will not accept new soil, and roots stop at the join instead of pushing through it. To build a bed, spread the mix, level it and plant straight in. Twenty five litres spread 100mm deep covers about a quarter of a square metre, so any real bed is a multiple bag job.

To improve existing soil, spread it over the surface and dig it through the top 150mm to 200mm rather than leaving it as a layer. On established beds, use it as a seasonal top up around plants, kept clear of stems and trunks. Water it in, and keep the bag sealed and dry until needed.

What it suits

Use. New garden beds, vegetable patches and flower borders, and landscaping work where soil has been stripped, replaced or worn out. It also suits raised beds that have settled.

Not for pots. Garden soil is heavier and finer than a potting mix, and in a container it compacts and holds water where roots need air. Use a potting mix for anything in a pot or a hanging basket.
