Fine Farms Sheep Manure is a straight organic soil conditioner in a 25 litre bag: sheep manure and nothing else, with no blending, no additives and no green waste. It is an all Australian product and the odour is low, which matters when you are working a bed in a suburban backyard. Use it to build fertility and structure in tired soil rather than to force fast growth.

What it does

  • Feeds the soil, not just the plant. Organic matter goes in as humus, which is what a worn out bed is genuinely short of.
  • Holds moisture. Soils treated with it hold water more effectively, so beds dry out more slowly between waterings.
  • Opens up structure. Aeration and texture improve as the manure breaks down, which helps most on compacted or heavy ground.
  • Brings the earthworms in. Worm activity follows organic matter, and worm activity is the cheapest soil improvement there is.

How to use it

Spread it evenly over the soil surface and lightly work it in if the bed allows. Twenty five litres spread 25mm deep covers about one square metre, so plan on a bag per square metre for a genuine soil rebuild, and less when you are topping up an established bed. Water in well after spreading. Use it before planting, worked through the top of the bed, or lay it as a conditioning layer around existing plants and let the rain and the worms take it down. Keep it clear of stems and trunks.

What it suits

Vegetable gardens and flower beds. This is where it does the most visible work: it lifts fertility ahead of a crop and keeps the bed friable through the season.

Trees, shrubs and general bed maintenance. A conditioning layer around established plantings feeds slowly as it breaks down. Bags are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Not a potting mix. Manure is a soil conditioner and belongs in the ground or blended through a bed. Do not pot a plant into it, and do not pile it against a stem, where it holds moisture exactly where you least want it.
