Fine Farms Poultry Manure is composted and aged chicken manure in a 25L bag, sold as a soil conditioner as much as a fertiliser. It is an Australian made product with no additives, no blends and no green waste content, so what goes on the garden is the manure and nothing else. It suits anyone rebuilding tired soil before a planting season.

What it does

  • Delivers organic nitrogen. Poultry manure is nitrogen led, and composting makes those nutrients readily available rather than locking them up while the material breaks down.
  • Improves soil structure. The organic matter opens compacted ground, improves aeration and helps the soil hold moisture through a dry run.
  • Feeds soil life. Earthworm activity and beneficial micro organisms both respond to it, and that biology keeps a bed productive between plantings.
  • Composted and aged. This is not raw manure. Ageing settles it down and makes the nutrients easier for plants to take up.

How to use it

In a new bed, spread it and incorporate it into the top layer of soil before you plant, working it through evenly rather than leaving pockets against roots. In an established garden, apply it as a surface layer and lightly work it in, then water. Around trees and shrubs, spread it at the drip line, where the feeding roots sit, not against the trunk. Spread it thin and even rather than heaping it: 25 litres covers more ground as a conditioner than as a mulch. Reapply through the year as the soil needs it, and water in after every application.

What it suits

Edible gardens. Vegetable and herb beds ahead of planting, where the nitrogen supports leafy growth and the organic matter keeps the bed friable through a season of cropping.

Beds and borders. Flowers, ornamentals, trees and shrubs, either as a pre planting soil improver or as an annual top up around the root zone. Bagged goods are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Not for. Filling pots. This is a soil amendment to be worked into ground soil, not a potting medium, and it is nitrogen led rather than balanced, so a fruiting crop will still want a complete fertiliser alongside it.
