The Brunnings Sphagnum Moss Block is a compressed block of natural sphagnum that opens out into as much as 10 litres of loose fibre once rehydrated. It is the material orchid and staghorn growers reach for: a moisture holding natural fibre that lines a basket, backs a mounted plant, or tops a pot to slow evaporation.

What it does

  • Holds moisture at the surface. Spread over the top of a pot it slows evaporation, so the mix underneath stays damp for longer between waterings.
  • Ten litres from one block. Compressed for storage, it expands to up to 10 litres of usable fibre, which covers a good number of baskets and pot surfaces.
  • Natural sphagnum moss. The moss itself and nothing else, so it can sit directly against roots and mounted plants.
  • Three jobs from one product. Mulching, basket lining and plant backing, plus a natural finish as a decorative top dressing.

How to use it

Remove the packaging and place the block in a large container. Add about 2 litres of water gradually, using tepid water between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, and wear gloves while you work. Break the block apart gently as it takes up the water, let it soak for three to four minutes, then drain the excess off. Keep pulling it apart until you have loose fibres, and spread them out to dry a little before use.

For mulching, spread the rehydrated moss evenly across the soil surface. For orchids and staghorns, pack it behind the plant and secure it in place. For hanging baskets, shape the damp fibre to the frame first, then add potting mix inside it.

What it suits

Use. Orchids, staghorns, elkhorns and other epiphytes, as backing and growing support where the roots want air as much as water.

Also use. Hanging baskets as a natural liner, and pots and planter boxes as a surface mulch. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Not for. Use as a potting mix on its own. Sphagnum holds a great deal of water, so a plant potted entirely in it, in a container that drains slowly, will sit wetter than most roots want.
