Brunnings Propagation Sand is a coarse grade sand for striking cuttings and for growing plants that need water to move through fast. The 5L bag is ready to use straight from the bag, on its own or blended into a mix. It is the medium to reach for when root rot, rather than drought, is what kills your cuttings.

What it does

  • Drains hard. The coarse grade lets water pass instead of holding it, which is what prevents waterlogging and the root rot that follows.
  • Holds air around new roots. A cutting needs oxygen at the base as much as moisture, and aeration is what a coarse sand gives that a fine mix cannot.
  • Blends into other media. Mixed in equal parts with peat moss it becomes a general propagation mix, so a 5L bag makes roughly 10L of usable medium.
  • Ready to use. Straight from the bag into a tray or pot, with no washing, sieving or conditioning first.

How to use it

For cuttings, fill a propagation tray or small pot with the sand on its own and insert the cuttings directly into it. For cacti, succulents, orchids and bulbs, plant into it straight to get the fast drainage those plants want. For a broader propagation mix, combine it in equal parts with peat moss. Water lightly rather than heavily, because the benefit of a free draining medium is lost if it is kept saturated. Five litres is a propagation quantity, enough for trays of cuttings and a few specialist pots, not a bag for filling large containers.

What it suits

Cuttings and young plants. Propagation trays and small pots, where the balance between drainage and air decides whether a cutting strikes or rots.

Cacti, succulents and orchids. Plants that resent wet feet do well planted straight into it, and it suits orchid bark bulbs and similar. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Not a potting mix. Sand carries no fertiliser and holds very little water, so treat it as a rooting and drainage medium. Once cuttings have struck, pot them into a proper mix.
