The Brunnings Coir Peat Brick is a compressed block of natural coir fibre that expands into roughly 15 litres of soil conditioner once you soak it. It loosens heavy ground, holds moisture in soil that dries out too fast, and works just as well blended through a potting mix. One brick stores on a shelf until you need it.

What it does

  • Improves soil structure. Coir fibre opens up compacted ground and hard clay, giving roots somewhere to go rather than a solid block to push against.
  • Holds water where roots can reach it. It increases the moisture holding capacity of the soil it is mixed into, so beds and pots go longer between waterings.
  • Lasts up to five years in the soil. Coir breaks down slowly, so one amendment keeps working for several seasons.
  • Recycled and renewable. Made from natural coir fibre, a recycled and renewable material.

How to use it

Sit the brick in a bucket or wheelbarrow and add water. It swells to about 15 litres of loose, damp fibre, and it needs to be fully hydrated before it goes near soil: a partly soaked brick will keep drawing water out of the bed after you dig it in. Break it apart by hand as it expands.

In garden beds, fork the expanded coir through the topsoil across the area you are planting, then plant into the improved ground. In a potting mix, blend it right through rather than layering it, so moisture is held evenly instead of in one band. Fifteen litres goes further in containers than across a bed, so buy to the area you are improving.

What it suits

Use. Garden beds with poor or compacted soil, hard clay in particular, and potting mixes that need better moisture retention and aeration.

Also use. Hydroponic systems, worm farm bedding and reptile enclosures, where a clean, moisture holding fibre is what is wanted. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95 and a minimum order of $300 before delivery.

Not for. Feeding plants. This is sold as a soil conditioner, not a fertiliser, so your usual feeding routine still applies.
