Sweet Garden sugar cane mulch is a light, clean organic mulch for garden beds, borders and vegetable patches. One 15kg bale covers up to 26 square metres as a 25mm top-up, or around 13 square metres laid at 50mm over bare soil. It is grown and made in Australia from sugar cane, and it breaks down into the bed rather than sitting on the surface for years.

What it does

  • Holds moisture and insulates. A covered surface loses far less water to evaporation, and the layer buffers soil against heat and cold, so roots are not swinging between extremes across the day.
  • Suppresses weeds. It works by cutting light at the soil surface, so weed seed that would otherwise strike never gets going.
  • Feeds the soil as it breaks down. It rots down into the bed, improving soil structure and supporting earthworms and other soil life.

How to use it

Clear existing weeds first. Mulch stops new weed seed germinating, it does not kill what is already growing. Spread evenly at 50mm for a new application over bare soil, which takes one bale to roughly 13 square metres, or at 25mm to top up an existing layer, where it stretches to the full 26 square metres.

Keep the mulch pulled back a hand width from trunks and stems, then water it lightly so it settles. Because it decomposes into the bed, plan on topping up once or twice a year depending on climate and watering. At 15kg the bale is a comfortable one person carry.

What it suits

Use on vegetable and flower beds. Sugar cane is fine and soft enough to work around annuals and seedlings, and it holds soil conditions steady where crops need consistency.

Use as a seasonal top-up. The 25mm rate is meant for refreshing beds that already carry mulch, which is most established gardens by late winter.
