The Pompeii Cauldron Planter is a wide, low bowl in hand crafted, double fired ceramic, finished in the black and white volcanic texture that defines the Pompeii range. It is made in four sizes, from 36 x 24cm to 96 x 68cm, quoted as outside dimensions. The cauldron form is broader than it is tall, which is what you want when the planting is meant to spread rather than stand up.
Why you'll love it
-
Width where it counts. A 96cm bowl gives a planting real ground to spread across, so mixed arrangements do not crowd.
-
Volcanic texture, hand finished. The surface varies from pot to pot, which stops a large piece looking mass produced.
-
Double fired ceramic. The second firing builds the depth in the finish.
-
Drainage holes as standard. A wide bowl holds a lot of mix, and it needs somewhere for water to leave.
Sizes and what fits in them
Given as diameter by height, measured outside.
-
36 x 24cm. The approachable size. A succulent grouping, a clump of ornamental grass, or 200mm nursery stock.
-
50 x 33cm. Width for a centre plant with trailing growth over the rim, or 250mm to 300mm stock.
-
74 x 51cm. A landscape scale bowl for a clipped shrub, a small palm, or an agave.
-
96 x 68cm. The largest, and hard landscaping in its own right. Plant it once, with something that holds for years.
Material, weathering and drainage
Material. Hand crafted, double fired ceramic. Each piece is finished individually, so the pattern differs between pots and sizes.
Outdoors. This is an outdoor planter first. We do not rate the range as frost proof, so in frost prone districts keep it out of the coldest, most exposed corner. Used inside, it needs a saucer under it.
Drainage. It has drainage holes and they need to stay clear. Raise the bowl on feet, cover the holes with one layer of fibreglass flyscreen (never fabric or geofabric, both clog), add 50mm of 10mm gravel, then fill with premium potting mix rather than garden soil. Choose plants suited to containers, because aggressive roots will damage any planter in time.
What to expect when it arrives
Planters ship empty and unplanted, packed for transit, and are dispatched in 2 to 5 business days. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. The 96 x 68cm size takes two people empty and does not move once planted, so settle the position and pot feet first.
